Safuwan relishing City chance

Singaporean defender Safuwan Baharudin says he is relishing life in the Hyundai A-League after joining Melbourne City FC in the January transfer window.

Safuwan has started in 5 matches this season and with two goals already under his belt, the versatile defender said he has just been happy to contribute to the team.

"I have been shifted around for the past couple of games and for the past two I’ve settled down at left back, it has been good,” Safuwan said.

“I’ve completed four 90 minute performances back to back. It’s an achievement for myself because I’ve been wanting to break the first team and I’ve even got a goal or two.

“I always want to improve and at the end of the day, I really want to achieve something here.”

The 23-year-old netted a first-half header mid-week against the Wanderers and insists his aerial ability is a key component of his game.

“A strength for my game is getting into the box for corners and getting headers into the goal,” Safuwan said.

“It’s definitely not easy in Australia with the physical aspect and they are tall, good in the air but they tend to loosen up here and that’s when I know I can capitalise on their mistakes,

“At that moment the ball camef into Paddy (Kisnorbo), I knew that I could get something out of it. Eventually, it dropped right in front of me and it gave me the chance to hit it on target.”

JVS buoyant despite losses

John van 't Schip says Melbourne City FC remain confident of finishing in the Hyundai A-League's top six despite suffering two costly defeats in the last six days.

City have gone down 1-0 away to the Central Coast Mariners and 3-2 at Western Sydney Wanderers FC in the last six days, leaving them seventh, one point behind Brisbane Roar but having played two matches more than their playoff rivals.

Next up is a home game with the Newcastle Jets on Saturday, a contest van 't Schip knows his players have to win to remain in the hunt.

"We're still confident," he said.

"We haven't made it easier. They [Brisbane] have the advantage now, they have two games in hand, they are leading by one point.

"If they don't make any mistakes, then it's easy [for them], they're in. We have to make sure we keep believing."

Van 't Schip confirmed Josh Kennedy will return to the starting XI after being rested for the defeat in Parramatta on Wednesday, while former Jet Kew Jaliens is likely to line up against his old side at centre-back in place of another Hunter Stadium old boy, Connor Chapman.

The 20-year-old will be suspended for at least one match after seeing red at Pirtek Stadium, with a Football Federation Australia disciplinary committee potentially set to extend the ban.

"Hopefully everybody has a good look at it and they will see there's not maybe that much going on," van 't Schip said of the incident.

"Then of course it's up to them to decide. Hopefully they take into consideration that Connor's track record [is good]. If not, we have to cop it.

"We had a chat. Of course he's disappointed. He's a young boy. He's important for us. This is something he'll learn a lot from."

Injured star Damien Duff this week flagged a likely return to Ireland in the coming months after his season was ended by a serious ankle and calf injury.

According to van 't Schip though, the veteran, spotted undergoing the early stages of his rehabilitation at City's gleaming new training complex on Friday, is yet to confirm he will not be staying for a second Hyundai A-League campaign.

"We talked about it but it's [at an] early stage," he said.

"Of course he's thinking about the rest of his career but also the rest of his life after football. A combination of maybe doing some courses to get his coaching badges and playing ... to finish in a good way.

"I can imagine if you have to stop like this with an injury, maybe you want to do it a different way. It's totally up to Damien. He will come up with something he's happy with."

JVS: “We’re still confident”

Melbourne City FC Head Coach John van’t Schip is confident his side can harness the energy and confidence from their form throughout February as they head towards an important clash with Newcastle Jets on Saturday.

After two disappointing losses to the Central Coast and the Western Sydney, van’t Schip said his side lacked mental toughness under pressure, however the Head Coach is still buoyant from the spells he saw his side take a 2-1 lead over the Wanderers.

“We want to make (forward) steps, the boys want to make steps and everybody is working on those things,” van’t Schip said.

“We’re already analysing those things so we’ll see how we can reinforce that and how we can get stronger,

“There were good patches but it wasn’t good enough for the win. We showed that we could have finished the game off but we didn’t and then...the pressure built up after that,

“We’re still confident, we haven’t made it easier. They (Brisbane), of course, have the advantage now with two games in hand and a point above but we just have to keep believing that we can make the finals and the first step is winning tomorrow.”

van’t Schip also confirmed that Kew Jaliens is likely to move to centre back for the Jets clash with the suspension of Connor Chapman.

However, the return of Josh Kennedy was confirmed by the Head Coach, with the striker likely to start on the weekend with Harry Novillo.

“Because of the short turn around this week, we knew it would be almost impossible for him (Kennedy) to play three games so we decided with the medical staff that he should prepare for the game against Newcastle,” van’t Schip said.

“What Harry (Novillo) showed was very positive. He played his last match in the middle of January and trained with a few teams to see if he could get a new team in February,

“You can see that he lacks a tad of match fitness but what he showed was positive and hopefully he can continue and even get stronger.”

But with the flow of players in and out of the side, van’t Schip is wary his side need to be performing week in, week out if they are to make the finals.

“It’s hard with the changes we have had in the team through injury, through the players we have had in and out,” van’t Schip said.

“I think we need to have more consistency not only in our results of course, but also in the way we play and that's a goal we have to aim for until the end of the season, to keep on working and focusing on that,

“You’re still in the finals (race) until it's mathematically impossible and until then, you have to believe these things and tomorrow is another game. We didn't do well in the last two games and tomorrow we have to make sure that we are on the good side of the result.

Safuwan scores again, but Melbourne City lose

TODAY reports: The 23-year-old Singaporean’s 28th minute strike had given the visitors the lead, but Western Sydney’s Matej Pollak equalised just before half-time.
Safuwan Baharudin scored his second goal in three matches for Melbourne City, but was unable to prevent his side from losing 3-2 to the Western Sydney Wanderers in an Australian A-League match on Wednesday (Mar 11).

The 23-year-old Singaporean’s 28th minute strike had given the visitors the lead, but Western Sydney’s Matej Pollak equalised just before half-time.

Aaron Mooy put Melbourne City ahead with a 71st minute free-kick, but late strikes from Tomi Juric and Nikita Rukavytsya secured all three points for Western Sydney.

The result sees Melbourne City drop to seventh with 24 points after 20 matches in the 10-strong A-League standings, whilst Western Sydney climb off the bottom into ninth with 11 points from 19 games.

Safuwan is with Melbourne City on a three-month loan from Singapore’s LionsXII. The Australian side are expected to make a decision by the end of the A-League season on whether to offer him a permanent deal.

Result: WS Wanderers 3-2 Melbourne City FC

Picture from Melbourne City

Melbourne City FC’s finals hopes were further dashed on Wednesday evening as John van’t Schip’s side fell to a dramatic and controversial 3-2 defeat at the hands of Western Sydney Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium.

In the rescheduled Round 10 Hyundai A-League match, which was delayed an hour due to a passing storm through Parramatta, Singaporean international Safuwan Baharudin handed Melbourne City FC the lead with a header at the back post in the 28th minute.

But the Wanderers struck back 10 minutes later through Mateo Poljak, who buried Western Sydney’s only clear-cut chance of the first stanza.

On the day he was called up to represent the Socceroos in upcoming friendly matches, Aaron Mooy scored what many thought would be the decisive goal, with a curling long-range free kick that evaded both his teammates and opponents and nestled in the back of the net.

But in a dramatic finale, the Wanderers equalised from the penalty spot through Tomi Juric, before Melbourne City FC were reduced to 10-men as Connor Chapman saw red and Nikita Rukavytsya conjured an injury-time winner for the hosts.

Melbourne City FC started the brighter of the two teams, with Frenchman Harry Novillo looking dangerous down the left wing, while Mate Dugandzic also looked promising on the right after returning from injury.

City’s first chance came from a set-piece from former Wanderer Mooy, with his low dipping ball into the box palmed awkwardly onto the crossbar by Western Sydney stopper Dean Bouzanis.

The opener came from another set-piece as Melbourne City FC recycled the ball out to Mooy following a corner and his cross to Kisnorbo was first cleared off the line by Yojiro Takahagi, but the rebound found Safuwan who steered the ball home.

Three minutes later, Melbourne City should have been 2-0 up after Dugandzic’s cut back from the edge of the penalty area was steered wide by the boot of international marquee Robi Koren.

Novillo flashed a deflected free-kick past Bouzanis’ upright in the 33rd minute, but Western Sydney hit back through Poljak, with the home side’s first real opportunity of the half, who coolly slotted past Tando Velaphi in the Melbourne City FC goal in a crowded penalty area.

Koren then struck the woodwork from an acute angle, with both sides entering the break equal, but with City enjoying the majority of chances.

Restricted to shots from distance, Melbourne City tried its luck through Mooy then Novillo early in the second period, before momentum started to shift in favour of the hosts.

First a powerful free-kick from Juric was tipped over the bar by Velaphi, before the Melbourne City ‘keeper produced one of the saves of the season, flying to his left to stop a certain Juric goal from a close-range shot.

That gave Melbourne City the impetus to push forward and the visitors took the lead through Mooy’s 40-metre free-kick that eluded everyone in the box and found its way past Bouzanis into the net in the 72nd minute.

But the lead would be short-lived as Chapman brought down Juric in the box and referee Strebe Delovski pointed to the spot in the 78th minute. Juric buried the penalty to draw the sides level.

Three minutes later, Chapman was sent off for remonstrating with Delovski, allowing Western Sydney to expose van’t Schip’s side in injury time as Rukavytsya steered home Tanaka’s cross to send City home empty handed.

VIDEO | Safuwan Baharudin second goal for Melbourne City against Western Sydney Wanderers

Wanderers win first game at home this season after Nikita Rukavytsya’s late goal downs City

AARON Mooy nearly came back to haunt his former club, but a 90th minute strike from Nikita Rukavytsya earned the Wanderers just their second win of the season.

It was a moment to savour for Western Sydney’s new recruit, who had missed a glorious chance to put his side ahead just moments before.

But his goal, which followed Tomi Juric’s 78th minute penalty, earned the Wanderers a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Melbourne City.

After a forgettable first half, the second 45 minutes was packed with drama, including a straight red card for Connor Chapman. The City player may be in strife after he was sent off for manhandling the referee.

The match was delayed by an hour due to an electrical storm over Parramatta.

There was an hour rain delay to start, which cut down precious time between kick-off’s for the Wanderers. Tomorrow night they take on Melbourne Victory at the same venue — an absurd 45 hours after the full time whistle sounded against City.

With that in mind, Tony Popovic had little choice but to make drastic changes to his team that played against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, including throwing on Sydney Olympic junior Jonathan Aspropotamitis for his debut in place of Matthew Spiranovic.

Ante Covic also made way for Dean Bouzanis — the first time in the club’s history the veteran goalkeeper didn’t appear in goals for a home game.

Erik Paartalu congratulates Safuwan Baharudin on his opening goal for Melbourne City.

Mooy returned to his old stomping ground for the first time since joining City, and on the same day he was named in Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos squad. If the midfielder had a point to prove, he didn’t waste much time making it. He whipped in a dangerous free-kick early in the first half that came within inches of resulting in the opening goal after Patrick Kisnorbo’s header skimmed the underside of the cross bar, before ricocheting to safety.

Mooy’s next cross into the box was of an even higher quality. Again Kisnorbo met it, but his effort was cleared off the line by Yojiro Takahagi, before Safuwan Baharudin headed home in the 27th minute.

Nikita Rukavytsya flies through the air after his winner as Tomi Juric trails after him.

There was barely an acknowledgment from the Wanderers faithful who braved the rain and delayed start to cheer on their team.

Fortunately, they were given something to cheer 10 minutes later, when Mateo Poljak scored his first goal of the season after some good lead up work by Juric.

It was 1-1 at the break, but the Wanderers returned with renewed energy in the second half. The home side dominated, and Juric had two good chances to put his team in front — the first with a well-worked free kick and the second which he should have buried, only to see his effort well saved by Tando Velaphi.

Nikita Rukavytsya celebrates in front of the RBB faithful in what has been a difficult A-League season.

The Wanderers were made to pay just moments later, when Mooy’s curling free-kick evaded everyone and found the back of the net. As beautifully struck as it was, Bouzanis will look at the replay and think he may have done better to stop it. Fortunately it didn’t prove decisive.

Tough day at the office for Safuwan

TODAY reports: Singapore international Safuwan Baharudin - on loan at Melbourne City FC - featured for the full 90 minutes but had to endure a 1-0 defeat at Central Coast Mariners.

Photo: Melbourne City Facebook Page

SINGAPORE: Safuwan Baharudin kept his place in Melbourne City FC’s starting line-up, but had to endure a 1-0 defeat at Central Coast Mariners on Sunday (Mar 8). A 74th-minute strike from Fabio Ferrera gave the home side all three points.

Singapore international Safuwan, who featured for the entire 90 minutes, was deployed in an unfamiliar role at left-back by Melbourne City coach John van’t Schip and was one of four players booked in a lacklustre match. The result means Melbourne City drop a place to seventh in the Hyundai A-League with 24 points after 19 games. Perth Glory continue to lead the 10-team league with 37 points after 20 matches.

Safuwan is on a three-month loan from LionsXII and scored his first goal for Melbourne in last month’s 3-1 win over Adelaide United.

Match Report: Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Melbourne City FC

Melbourne City FC’s Finals Series hopes suffered a major blow as John van’t Schip’s side crashed to defeat against eight-placed Central Coast Mariners on Sunday afternoon in Round 20 of the Hyundai A-League.

In the first of three crucial matches in six days against opponents below it on the ladder, Melbourne City FC had the opportunity to cement itself in the top six with a win, ahead of matches against Western Sydney Wanderers (Wednesday) and Newcastle Jets (Saturday).

But a Fabio Ferreira free kick in the 74th minute gave the Mariners all three points – two days after the Gosford-based club announced it had parted ways with Head Coach Phil Moss – meaning Melbourne City FC’s hold on sixth place is in jeopardy with Brisbane Roar in action against Western Sydney on Sunday evening.

City went agonisingly close to an equaliser in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time as Iain Ramsay’s close-range shot at the back post was saved from point-blank range by Central Coast stopper Liam Reddy in the 94th minute.

It was a bitter blow for Melbourne City, who dominated play during the first half, but couldn’t convert dominance into pressure on the scoreboard and ultimately paid the price in the second half as Ferreira buried a well-taken set-piece.

There were plenty of positives for the visitors heading into the match, with Massimo Murdocca earning his 200th Hyundai A-League appearance, while new signing – injury replacement Harry Novillo – commenced the match on the bench, but would be injected in the second half.

While an early chance fell to man-of-the-match Isaka Cernak in the ninth minute for the Mariners, it was City who created the more clear-cut chances in the first stanza.

Cernak, who received a long ball from midfielder Nick Montgomery, fired past Tando Velaphi’s upright in the first scare of the match, as the Mariners looked to threaten early.

From there, Melbourne looked the stronger of the two sides, with Reddy forced into a string of fine saves, while the Mariners defence were often on the back foot, although the home side defended valiantly.

One of City’s best chances fell in the 23rd minute when Aaron Mooy’s corner was flicked toward goal by Josh Kennedy, which brought a full-stretch reaction save from Reddy, before Patrick Kisnorbo headed the rebound over the bar, with an open goal gaping.

Anthony Caceres then denied City on the break with a last-ditch tackle, cutting out David Williams, who had been fed through on goal by Mooy on the half hour mark.

Kennedy found space to shoot from outside the area seven minutes later, curling a great shot toward Reddy’s top corner, but the ‘keeper dived to his left to tip the shot around the corner.

As they had early in the first, Mariners threatened early in the second half, with Montgomery finding Ferreira with a precision through-ball in the 50th minute, only for the Portugese winger to fire into the side netting.

Mariners’ best chance fell to Nick Fitzgerald six minutes later, with Ferreira providing a perfect cross into the six yard box, but Fitzgerald headed straight into the arms of a thankful Velaphi.

The solitary goal came in the 74th minute after Connor Chapman brought Cernak down on the edge of the area and with four Mariners’ players over the resulting free-kick, Ferreira fired home an alternative free-kick routine past a helpless Velaphi.

Melbourne looked to push for the eqauliser, throwing Frenchman Novillo into the fray, who looked lively down the left with his skill and pace, before moving more centrally.

But despite continuing to throw bodies forward and looping balls into the box, City’s last chance of the match fell to Ramsay, who, in the 94th minute, found himself on the end of a long Jason Hoffman throw-in at the back post, but couldn’t turn his close-range shot past Reddy, who blocked with his chest.
