Safuwan to miss Perth Glory clash

Singaporean international Safuwan Baharudin is unavailable due to a minor back injury.
“Safuwan also picked up a problem this week so hopefully he can come back and prepare himself for the Reds,” van’t Schip said.
“He’s feeling a bit of tightness in his back and we just have to be careful with that.”
Van’t Schip will look to blood youth this week, with the match against Perth coming at an opportune time for the Dutchman to test the depth of his squad.
“We’ll have a few boys come in, Stefan Mauk will come in, Marc Marino will come in and we’re going to take Nick Symeoy with us so there will be a few [young] boys who will be travelling with us.” van’t Schip said.

Melbourne City prepare for off-season shake-up

Melbourne City are just weeks away from a massive off-season cull that will help shape their charge for the 2015/16 A-League title.
As many as 11 players have unclear futures at the club and could leave City following the finals campaign.
And it's the group that has spearheaded City's run to the finals that hang in the balance.
Of the 14 players who contributed in City's bright 0-0 draw with Wellington on Sunday, six have no contracts for next season.

Goalkeeper Tando Velaphi, veteran stopper Kew Jaliens, utility players Safuwan Baharudin, Paulo Retre and Jonatan Germano, as well as recently arrived French winger Harry Novillo aren't tied down.
The six are joined by five others in an "Out of Contract XI" which would prove a handful for many A-League clubs.
Apart from Robi Koren, all of the club's designated overseas visa players are coming out of contract, giving coach John van `t Schip great flexibility as he looks to build a squad to challenge for next season's premiership.
With just two rounds remaining before the club's finals campaign, made certain by Perth Glory's expulsion, the Dutch coach said he was putting off decisions on whom to cull and whom to keep until season's end.
"It's important, you don't decide it in one day," he said. "We're talking about it and we're looking at it.
"At the moment it's not having our biggest thoughts, we're focussing on the football side on the pitch.
"There's time enough in a few weeks... because then we can really sit down and make decisions that we think are going to hopefully benefit for next year."
Club captain Patrick Kisnorbo was also understood to be out of contract at season's end until van `t Schip revealed the defender had secured another year by passing a trigger-point in his deal.
Kisnorbo hasn't missed an A-League match this season in his best campaign with the club.
The impending shake-up could play out in different ways among the playing group.
Looming unemployment could spur individuals to perform well on the pitch, hoping to earn a new deal.
Or the uncertainty could get to others, putting in lacklustre effort if they feel the die is cast.
With the club on a five-game unbeaten streak, it certainly hasn't affected City thus far.

Melbourne City FC says whether or not Safuwan Baharudin continues to play for them depends on negotiations with their football department and coaching staff.

Safuwan returns to the starting line up with Melbourne City with a huge impact. As early as the 4th minute, Singaporean international Safuwan directed a header on target.
Safuwan then bundled over Louis Fenton in the box, conceding a penalty and earning a yellow card in the process.
Safuwan had a sensational chance in the 70th minute a substitute Paulo Retre recycled a corner and the Singaporean drove a low shot on target in a crowded penalty area, but Moss saved and Wellington’s defence scrambled the ball clear.
Melbourne City FC’s finals hopes are well and truly alive after a 0-0 draw with Wellington Phoenix in an enthralling encounter at AAMI Park in City’s final home match of the 2014/15 season.
Sixth-placed City are now four points clear of seventh-placed Brisbane Roar with two rounds to play, although Roar have one match in hand as the season comes to a nail-biting conclusion.
The draw sees City finish its home fixtures with a run of nine matches unbeaten at AAMI Park, stretching back to November 2014, while its most recent unbeaten form extends to five matches (3 wins, 2 draws), heading into the final two rounds.
With a pairing between City – a finals series hopeful, fighting for sixth spot on the ladder with the Roar - and Phoenix – still a title hopeful, two points behind top spot prior to kick-off - there was plenty riding on Sunday afternoon’s Round 25 clash.
And the match didn’t disappoint, despite the 0-0 score line. In one of the most entertaining encounters of the season, City produced a fast, energetic display, which Phoenix matched with a particularly impressive attacking display.
Fittingly in a 0-0 stalemate, both ‘keepers were arguably best on ground with Wellington’s Glen Moss producing a string of important saves to deny City, while Tando Velaphi was called into regular action and crucially saved Nathan Burns’ first-half penalty to secure his eigth clean sheet in 15 appearances.
With a number of changes to City’s back line, City welcomed Connor Chapman and Safuwan Baharudin back into defence as Kew Jaliens pushed out wide and Jack Clisby and Paulo Retre made way, and City started the match in fantastic fashion with a rejigged line-up.
The home side were certainly on top in the early stages of the first stanza, creating a number of key openings and attempts on Wellington’s goal.
However, it was the visitors who should have opened the scoring from the penalty spot, with Velaphi producing a crucial save as Burns direct his spot-kick into the grateful arms of the Melbourne City stopper.
City’s dynamic start to the match was ignited by an early chance as Jonatan Germano pinched the ball off Alex Rodriguez in midfield and then attempted to chip Moss from 40 metres with an audacious effort.
Despite directing the shot on target, Moss back-pedalled and recovered to save, but it was a sign of things to come as Slovenian marquee Robert Koren fired in a rocket on his left boot, forcing Moss to tip over the bar just a minute later.
Returning to the starting line-up after international duty, Singaporean international Safuwan directed a header on target, before Australian marquee Josh Kennedy had an effort blocked at close range.
Melbourne’s in-form midfielder Aaron Mooy then tried his luck with a looping shot which threatened to squeeze into the top corner in the 11th minute; a shot which required the fingertips of the busy Moss to keep it out, although crossing to an unmarked Kennedy at the back post may have been a more sensible option.
But City were nearly stung with a double blow just quarter of an hour into the enthralling encounter, as Safuwan bundled over Louis Fenton in the box, conceding a penalty and earning a yellow card in the process.
Nathan Burns, one of the league’s most prolific strikers with 13 goals this season, aimed his penalty straight down the middle of the goal, where a thankful Velaphi collected the effort easily.
Fenton continued to cause havoc down the right for Ernie Merrick’s side, first squaring to Krishna who contolled and shot wide, before Burns sent Manny Muscat through on goal, only for the defender to shoot straight at Velaphi.
City threatened only from distance following Phoenix’s more controlled spell in the first half, with Mooy cutting inside from the left on two occasions, only to fire high and wide.
Koren almost handed Phoenix the opener, sending a miss-weighted pass-back towards Velaphi which was intercepted by Burns. The Socceroo advanced on goal but a timely interception by Jaliens prevent a clear sight on goal.
The second half commenced with the same tempo as the first as Novillo smacked a free kick wide just two minutes into the second half, before Mooy found the head of Paartalu six minutes later, but the towering central midfielder could only direct his header straight to Moss.
One minute later and Wellington mounted intense pressure on City for a period of 10 minutes, with Kisnorbo forced into a last ditch block to prevent Krishna breaching the back line and then Velaphi was again called into action, tipping another Burns effort over the bar.

Germano then produced another outstanding save from Moss, before CIty nearly clinched it at the death, with Mooy's free kick in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time finding Paartalu, only for his header to clip the top of the cross bar.
City travel to Western Australia to challenge Perth Glory next Sunday and then finish the season with an ANZAC Day clash against Adelaide United.

Melbourne City regain key men Safuwan Baharudin at the right time

Injuries cut deepest at this time of year, with finals looming and a weekly scramble for points, but Melbourne City will get a boost from the return of three important players as they battle for the final spot in the top six.
City have lost key players for long stretches of the season.
Marquee man Robert Koren missed virtually all of the first half of the campaign through injury, only coming into the squad around Christmas. The former Premier League attacking midfielder is really only starting to have a consistent impact now.
Other City players have suffered numerous injuries that have kept them out for weeks at a time: Mate Dugandzic missed a chunk of the season while Josh Kennedy, the tall Socceroo frontman, is a fragile player who has battled a back problem for a long time. It cost him a spot at the World Cup in Brazil when he was one of the last players cut before the deadline for squad announcements had to be made.
The hapless James Brown, who made a comeback only a fortnight ago with the winning goal against Sydney in the 1-0 win that rekindled City's finals charge, has suffered another serious setback. Brown will miss the remainder of the season after injuring an ankle in the recent 1-0 win over Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park.
But City finally have some good news on the illness, injury, suspension and absence front.
As they battle for the last spot in the top six (assuming Perth Glory don't have 15 or more points deducted for salary cap infractions if they are proven later this week) they will benefit from the return of Safuwan Baharudin for the final matches of the home and away season and the finals themselves.
SAFUWAN BAHARUDIN
Safuwan is now available, having been away with the Singaporean team on international duty, missing the past few games.
The Asian utility has made a strong impression playing in a variety of roles since joining City after the Asian Cup and has even got himself on the scoresheet. Scoring 2 goals in 5 games as a defender proves that he is also an attacking defender. He may well be considered for a spot in the starting line-up for Sunday's big game with Premiership-chasing Wellington Phoenix.
One win in their last three matches might be enough to secure a finals spot for City. Van 't Schip's side is six points clear of Brisbane, who have a game in hand.
If City can beat either Wellington, Perth or Adelaide over the next three weeks Brisbane would have to win all four of their remaining games to catch and pass them. That's a tall order, given they face Melbourne Victory twice and also have to travel to Korea and China for Asian Champions League games over the next three weeks.

Late strikes land Thais 2-0 win in S’pore-Thailand friendly

SINGAPORE — Singapore lost 2-0 to Thailand in a friendly football match in Korat today (March 26) to mark 50 years of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Late strikes from Suttinun Phukhom after 86 minutes and Pokklaw A-Nan’s injury time goal gave the reigning Asean champions the win.
Prior to kick off, a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first Prime Minister who died on Monday at the age of 91. Both teams also donned black armbands during the match.
Singapore’s next match is a friendly against Guam at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday (March 31).

Singapore A-League star SAFUWAN BAHARUDIN exploits a hit back home by John Duerden

Much of the talk among football fans in the city state is whether Safuwan Baharudin is going to earn an extension on his three month loan deal at Melbourne City FC, or a permanent move.
The defender's every move has been followed closely. One editor of a respected publication said that putting the 23 year-old's adventures down under in a headline provide a great source of clicks.
As well as the written press, there has been plenty of interest on television too. Melbourne's game have been broadcast live on Star Hub.
At the city's buzzing Clarke's Quay these days, you don't have to watch the world go by as you sink a cold beer, you can watch the Hyundai A-League.
It has been a success in other areas, especially where it matters – on the pitch.
It's still early days but in five games in the A-League, the versatile Singaporean has two goals, a regular place in the starting line-up and plenty of acclaim. When the national team coach Bernd Stange (who will be well known to Perth Gllory fans) announced his squad, Safuwan was was the one in the headlines. That wasn't the case before the Melbourne move.
Not only that, there have been questions as to whether being called up may harm his Hyundai A-League chances.
There is genuine pride in his exploits and the former Lions XII star has provided some sunshine to his country's football scene in the early months of 2015. His is a feelgood story after a disappointing AFF Suzuki Cup in November.
This biennial regional tournament is a very big deal and Singapore headed into the 2014 version as defending champion. Consequently, losing the final group game to bitter rivals Malaysia was bad enough but the manner of defeat was especially painful.
Singapore, playing at home, needed just a draw to progress to the semi-finals. It was not looking good when Safee Sali put Malaysia ahead. The relief could be felt all around the National Stadium when they equalised but Malaysia scored two very late goals to win 3-1.
It was a big blow for fans but Safuwan's exploits helped take minds off regional woes.
No Singapore international has really made an impact outside the ASEAN zone. That is the hope at home and the rest of southeast Asia where Safuwan's adventures are also followed.
"It's a higher level here [in the A-League] and at times - when I'm not playing in my regular centre-back position - I've been afraid of making mistakes,” he told The New Paper earlier this month.
“I've played in four positions now - at centre-back, left-back, right-back and defensive midfield - and I hope that I've shown that Asian players can do well here."
They already have but not in large numbers. Thailand's Sutee Suksomkit signed for Melbourne Victory in 2009 but it was Surat Sukha, similarly versatile to Safuwan, who really impressed at the same club.
The left-back is not in the Thai team that will take on Singapore on Thursday. Now 32, he is a little old for the new youthful version of the War Elephants that impressed when winning the AFF Suzuki Cup, south-east Asia's biennial regional tournament in December.
He does, however, still play for Buriram United, the top club in Thailand and these days, the whole of south-east Asia. The north-eastern club reached the quarter-final of the 2013 Asian Champions League and is currently top of its group of the 2015 edition at the halfway stage.
A look at the Thailand Premier League and the national team shows that there is plenty of talent in the region but for Singapore it is about putting the disappointment of November behind it.
If Safuwan can help in that, then so much the better but what fans at home really want is a permanent contract at Melbourne City.

Safuwan Baharudin waits for Melbourne City contract

But the clock is ticking down on Safuwan Baharudin's three-month loan deal, and while the Singapore international has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the A-League, he has not got any word, yet, if City are keen to keep him past the end of April.
"I've heard comments that I'm doing well and stand a good chance to earn an extension to the contract, and even a permanent deal, but I have not got any news from the club, yet," said Safuwan, yesterday.
The New Paper understands that an extension of the deal is dependent on City finishing in the top six of the 10-team A-League, and qualifying for the post-season play-offs.
John van't Schip's charges beat Newcastle Jets 4-0 on Saturday and are now two points ahead of seventh-placed Brisbane Roar, although they have played two games more.
Safuwan's loan deal is set to come to an end after four April fixtures for City, who are well in the hunt for that coveted sixth spot.
"Some have asked me to come back and join the LionsXII (in the Malaysian Super League) while others said it's better for me to stay.
"Honestly, it isn't an easy decision, and one that I have to make with my family," said the 23-year-old centre back, who is expected to join up with Bernd Stange's Lions this week for two upcoming international friendlies.
The national team will face Thailand in Bangkok on March 26, with another friendly scheduled on March 31.
The MSL mid-season transfer window will be open from April 1 to 28, which means Safuwan will almost certainly have to make a quick decision if any offer comes from City - the A-League side's final regular season game is on April 25.
Right now, though, Safuwan is just enjoying his time in the Australian sun.

"The first two weeks were very hectic, I was looking for a place to stay while having to settle in during training sessions, but it's been wonderful here.
"Now there are no more excuses, I've been here a month and two weeks now, and all I want is to do well with the club," he said.
"It's a higher level here and at times -- when I'm not playing in my regular centre-back position -- I've been afraid of making mistakes. I've played in four positions now - at centre-back, left-back, right-back and defensive midfield - and I hope that I've shown that Asian players can do well here."
Speaking to TNP in a phone interview, Newcastle Jets assistant coach, Mark Jones, says the former Singapore Sports School student has done the Republic proud.
Safuwan was not in the City matchday squad that beat the Jets on Saturday, but Jones believes the defender has already paved the way for Singapore footballers.
"Safuwan's performance at Melbourne City suggests that Singapore players can play at the highest level in Australia," said Jones, who spent some time with Singapore's National Football Academy set-up before leaving for the Jets last year.
"We played City (on Saturday) and while he didn't play, I had a very good look at him while studying videos of City's games ahead of the match," he said.
"I think Safuwan's really got into the game here, he's even got into the box and got a couple of goals, and I think he's doing very well."

Safuwan Baharudin returns to Singapore to play in two friendlies

Since his debut against derby rivals Melbourne Victory on Feb 7, Safuwan has made the starting XI of his new club five times, yielding two goals.
The first came when City defeated Adelaide United 3-1 on Feb 27 before their March 11 tie against Western Sydney Wanderers. City eventually lost 2-3 to Western Sydney.
Safuwan is now back in Singapore to play in two friendlies with the Lions.
Amazing opportunities
"I was surprised (with the two goals) because before I joined, I thought it would be hard to score in the A-League," the 23-year-old told Berita Harian, in a report published today (March 19).
"Even more so because I'm a defender. My opportunities usually come through set-pieces ... with players who are well-built, and who play well in the air, you have to be fast in converting opportunities, and that's what I try to do.
"The opportunities so far have been amazing, but my focus is to keep making the top 11 more often.
"At the same time, there's a lot for me to learn during training sessions and from my teammates here."
He'll be part of the national squad facing Thailand in Korat on March 26 and Guam at Jalan Besar Stadium on March 31.
Extended deal?
His national team duties means he will miss two A-League matches - an away game with Sydney FC on Friday and a home game with Brisbane Roar next Saturday (March 28).
Safuwan will only return to City for their game with Western Sydney Wanderers on April 3 - one of the last four matches before the A-League 'finals', which will also mark the end of his three-month loan to the Australian club.
That is, of course, unless he gets an offer to extend his contract there.
Safuwan, however, does not want to think too much about his future in Australia.
He said: "God willing, I hope I get to stay longer in Australia but I prefer to go day by day as my future (with Melbourne City) is still uncertain."

Safuwan targets more A-League goals after scoring again for Melbourne City via ESPN
Safuwan, seen tackling Western Sydney winger Labinot Haliti, scored his second goal for Melbourne City on Wednesday as his side lost to the Asian champions 3-2.
Singapore international Safuwan Baharudin says he intends to keep on scoring after netting his second goal in three games for Melbourne City in the A-League.
Playing as a left fullback, Safuwan grabbed the opener as City lost 3-2 at Asian champions Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday night, despite twice holding the lead.
But the game at Parramatta was another personal milestone for the 23-year-old import who produced a lively performance for John van't Schip's side. His 28th minute goal was a header from a corner and underlined Safuwan's attacking prowess from set pieces.
"The strength of my game has always been getting into the box and getting up for the corners and getting headers on goal," Safuwan said. "It's definitely not easy here in Australia physically and the boys are tall are good in the air.
"(But) that moment when the ball came into the area, I knew that I could get something out of it. Eventually it dropped right in front of me. There was no chance of me not hitting it on target."
After Aaron Mooy's corner was cleared by Western Sydney Wanderers, Mooy whipped in a cross that was headed on target by Melbourne City captain Patrick Kisnorbo. After a goalline clearance from Wanderers, Safuwan then made no mistake from close range.
Western Sydney's Matej Pollak equalised just before half-time before Mooy put Melbourne City ahead with a 71st minute freekick. But late strikes from Tomi Juric and Nikita Rukavytsya secured all three points for Tony Popovic's side.
Melbourne City remain one point outside the A-League top six, behind Brisbane Roar, but the Queensland side have two matches in hand.
City's next game is at home to last placed Newcastle Jets on Saturday where Safuwan will look to add to his goal tally.
"It's one thing to break into the first team but now I have another goal in the bag," he said.
"I've completed almost three 90 minutes of games back-to-back. It's an achievement for myself. But it's been hard for us -- we've been delivering good games but at the end of the day we don't produce the results. We just need to bounce back for the Newcastle Jets' game."
Safuwan is on a three-month loan spell at Melbourne City from Singapore's LionsXII. He is the first Singaporean to play and score in the A-League, having made his debut against Melbourne Victory on Feb. 7 and opening his goal account against Adelaide United on Feb. 27. In five matches, he has played in three different positions; all but one of them in the back four.
His second Melbourne City goal will improve his chances of extending his deal beyond this season. If City fail to make the A-League finals, their final regular season game is away to Adelaide United on April 25.

Safuwan relishing City chance
Singaporean defender Safuwan Baharudin says he is relishing life in the Hyundai A-League after joining Melbourne City FC in the January transfer window.
Safuwan has started in 5 matches this season and with two goals already under his belt, the versatile defender said he has just been happy to contribute to the team.
"I have been shifted around for the past couple of games and for the past two I’ve settled down at left back, it has been good,” Safuwan said.
“I’ve completed four 90 minute performances back to back. It’s an achievement for myself because I’ve been wanting to break the first team and I’ve even got a goal or two.
“I always want to improve and at the end of the day, I really want to achieve something here.”
The 23-year-old netted a first-half header mid-week against the Wanderers and insists his aerial ability is a key component of his game.
“A strength for my game is getting into the box for corners and getting headers into the goal,” Safuwan said.
“It’s definitely not easy in Australia with the physical aspect and they are tall, good in the air but they tend to loosen up here and that’s when I know I can capitalise on their mistakes,
“At that moment the ball camef into Paddy (Kisnorbo), I knew that I could get something out of it. Eventually, it dropped right in front of me and it gave me the chance to hit it on target.”

"If they don't make any mistakes, then it's easy [for them], they're in. We have to make sure we keep believing."
Van 't Schip confirmed Josh Kennedy will return to the starting XI after being rested for the defeat in Parramatta on Wednesday, while former Jet Kew Jaliens is likely to line up against his old side at centre-back in place of another Hunter Stadium old boy, Connor Chapman.
The 20-year-old will be suspended for at least one match after seeing red at Pirtek Stadium, with a Football Federation Australia disciplinary committee potentially set to extend the ban.
"Hopefully everybody has a good look at it and they will see there's not maybe that much going on," van 't Schip said of the incident.
"Then of course it's up to them to decide. Hopefully they take into consideration that Connor's track record [is good]. If not, we have to cop it.
"We had a chat. Of course he's disappointed. He's a young boy. He's important for us. This is something he'll learn a lot from."
Injured star Damien Duff this week flagged a likely return to Ireland in the coming months after his season was ended by a serious ankle and calf injury.
According to van 't Schip though, the veteran, spotted undergoing the early stages of his rehabilitation at City's gleaming new training complex on Friday, is yet to confirm he will not be staying for a second Hyundai A-League campaign.
"We talked about it but it's [at an] early stage," he said.
"Of course he's thinking about the rest of his career but also the rest of his life after football. A combination of maybe doing some courses to get his coaching badges and playing ... to finish in a good way.
"I can imagine if you have to stop like this with an injury, maybe you want to do it a different way. It's totally up to Damien. He will come up with something he's happy with."

Wanderers win first game at home this season after Nikita Rukavytsya’s late goal downs City
AARON Mooy nearly came back to haunt his former club, but a 90th minute strike from Nikita Rukavytsya earned the Wanderers just their second win of the season.
It was a moment to savour for Western Sydney’s new recruit, who had missed a glorious chance to put his side ahead just moments before.
But his goal, which followed Tomi Juric’s 78th minute penalty, earned the Wanderers a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Melbourne City.
After a forgettable first half, the second 45 minutes was packed with drama, including a straight red card for Connor Chapman. The City player may be in strife after he was sent off for manhandling the referee.
The match was delayed by an hour due to an electrical storm over Parramatta.
There was an hour rain delay to start, which cut down precious time between kick-off’s for the Wanderers. Tomorrow night they take on Melbourne Victory at the same venue — an absurd 45 hours after the full time whistle sounded against City.
With that in mind, Tony Popovic had little choice but to make drastic changes to his team that played against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, including throwing on Sydney Olympic junior Jonathan Aspropotamitis for his debut in place of Matthew Spiranovic.
Ante Covic also made way for Dean Bouzanis — the first time in the club’s history the veteran goalkeeper didn’t appear in goals for a home game.

Mooy returned to his old stomping ground for the first time since joining City, and on the same day he was named in Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos squad. If the midfielder had a point to prove, he didn’t waste much time making it. He whipped in a dangerous free-kick early in the first half that came within inches of resulting in the opening goal after Patrick Kisnorbo’s header skimmed the underside of the cross bar, before ricocheting to safety.
Mooy’s next cross into the box was of an even higher quality. Again Kisnorbo met it, but his effort was cleared off the line by Yojiro Takahagi, before Safuwan Baharudin headed home in the 27th minute.

Match Report: Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Melbourne City FC
Melbourne City FC’s Finals Series hopes suffered a major blow as John van’t Schip’s side crashed to defeat against eight-placed Central Coast Mariners on Sunday afternoon in Round 20 of the Hyundai A-League.
In the first of three crucial matches in six days against opponents below it on the ladder, Melbourne City FC had the opportunity to cement itself in the top six with a win, ahead of matches against Western Sydney Wanderers (Wednesday) and Newcastle Jets (Saturday).
But a Fabio Ferreira free kick in the 74th minute gave the Mariners all three points – two days after the Gosford-based club announced it had parted ways with Head Coach Phil Moss – meaning Melbourne City FC’s hold on sixth place is in jeopardy with Brisbane Roar in action against Western Sydney on Sunday evening.
City went agonisingly close to an equaliser in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time as Iain Ramsay’s close-range shot at the back post was saved from point-blank range by Central Coast stopper Liam Reddy in the 94th minute.
It was a bitter blow for Melbourne City, who dominated play during the first half, but couldn’t convert dominance into pressure on the scoreboard and ultimately paid the price in the second half as Ferreira buried a well-taken set-piece.
There were plenty of positives for the visitors heading into the match, with Massimo Murdocca earning his 200th Hyundai A-League appearance, while new signing – injury replacement Harry Novillo – commenced the match on the bench, but would be injected in the second half.
While an early chance fell to man-of-the-match Isaka Cernak in the ninth minute for the Mariners, it was City who created the more clear-cut chances in the first stanza.
Cernak, who received a long ball from midfielder Nick Montgomery, fired past Tando Velaphi’s upright in the first scare of the match, as the Mariners looked to threaten early.
From there, Melbourne looked the stronger of the two sides, with Reddy forced into a string of fine saves, while the Mariners defence were often on the back foot, although the home side defended valiantly.
One of City’s best chances fell in the 23rd minute when Aaron Mooy’s corner was flicked toward goal by Josh Kennedy, which brought a full-stretch reaction save from Reddy, before Patrick Kisnorbo headed the rebound over the bar, with an open goal gaping.
Anthony Caceres then denied City on the break with a last-ditch tackle, cutting out David Williams, who had been fed through on goal by Mooy on the half hour mark.
Kennedy found space to shoot from outside the area seven minutes later, curling a great shot toward Reddy’s top corner, but the ‘keeper dived to his left to tip the shot around the corner.
As they had early in the first, Mariners threatened early in the second half, with Montgomery finding Ferreira with a precision through-ball in the 50th minute, only for the Portugese winger to fire into the side netting.
Mariners’ best chance fell to Nick Fitzgerald six minutes later, with Ferreira providing a perfect cross into the six yard box, but Fitzgerald headed straight into the arms of a thankful Velaphi.
The solitary goal came in the 74th minute after Connor Chapman brought Cernak down on the edge of the area and with four Mariners’ players over the resulting free-kick, Ferreira fired home an alternative free-kick routine past a helpless Velaphi.
Melbourne looked to push for the eqauliser, throwing Frenchman Novillo into the fray, who looked lively down the left with his skill and pace, before moving more centrally.
But despite continuing to throw bodies forward and looping balls into the box, City’s last chance of the match fell to Ramsay, who, in the 94th minute, found himself on the end of a long Jason Hoffman throw-in at the back post, but couldn’t turn his close-range shot past Reddy, who blocked with his chest.

A look at Safuwan Baharudin through the years
Footballer Safuwan Baharudin made headlines last week when he became the first Singaporean to score a goal in the A-League, the top flight in Australian soccer.
The defender bulged the net to equalise for Melbourne City in his team's 3-1 win over Adelaide United. Plaudits flowed after that, including the Man of the Match award, congratulations from Melbourne's parent club Manchester City as well as selection in the A-League's Team of the Week.
Here is a look at Safuwan's rise from childhood to stardom Down Under.
Early promise

But on Feb 27, Safuwan played a blinder as he helped City beat Adelaide United 3-1. Deployed at right-back, he arrived at the far post to ram home a corner to equalise, sparking a comeback win.

For his heroics, the Singaporean was named Man of the Match and Manchester City congratulated him on social media. On a lighter note, he is now featured on popular video game FIFA15 as a Melbourne player.

National call-up
Safuwan's rise continued in January 2010 when former national coach Raddy Avramovic handed him his first Singapore cap in a King's Cup game against hosts Thailand. Although the Lions lost 1-0, the Serb kept faith in the then 19-year-old.

Later that year, the youngster was given a starting place against hosts Vietnam at the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. However, he slipped and gave away the only goal of the match as the Lions were eliminated in the group stage.

Two years after his heartbreak in Hanoi, Safuwan bounced back in style, establishing himself as a first-team regular in Singapore's victorious Suzuki Cup campaign. In the first leg of the final against Thailand, he played the full match at the Jalan Besar Stadium despite suffering a fever. The Lions eventually won 3-2 on aggregate.

In 2013, the centre-back reinforced his reputation as one of Singapore's best footballers when he emerged as one of the pillars of the LionsXII's Malaysian Super League title run, scoring five goals in 26 games, including the crucial equaliser in the 2-2 draw against star-studded Johor Darul Takzim.
Off the pitch, Safuwan also had a memorable 2013 as he married air stewardess Alia Qistina.
